Smoking, in one word is choice.
First of all I'm not a smoker, read into that what you will and assume whatever you wish, go nuts.
When I was younger I was a pillar of strength against smoking, got my Grandparents to quit by being a nuisance. How you might ask? By quite simply repeating over and over like a parrot 'Quit Smoking Now' (yes with capitals at the beginning of each word).

I, as I already said, don't smoke, personal choice due to not being able to fathom spending so much on cigarettes, especially when it isn't beneficial.
Though I appreciate it may look like I'm hoisting a torch and a pitchfork to all smokers, I'm not. Just like everything in life it's a choice. I made a choice to try a few cigarettes, didn't particularly care for them, then made a choice to not continue.
Off on a slight tangent I suppose, is why people begin to smoke, why people try their first cigarette.
If you type it into google you get over 182,000,000 results. A good site for explanation off that ridiculous list would be (http://ezinearticles.com/?Why-Start-Smoking?&id=2023717 ).
It looks at smoking over the years, many years ago smoking was looked at as glamorous, before that it was even thought to be healthy. When smoking got into films it developed the cool vibe, rebellion was then dragged into the mix. More so now.
When the age restriction on cigarettes rose from 16 to 18 it became even more rebellious to smoke, I haven't seen so many little Chavlets running around with a pack of fags looking so pleased.
Well that's my incoherent burp of a blog post.
